The Arraignment

On the 8th of May, 1992, the PV19 are schedule to face an arraignment, where the remaining 15 members of the PV19 will be pleading not guilty. Frank Jackson declares these actions by the courts as an “error of the election administrator.”

Students had been dropped from the voter rolls improperly, and without their knowledge. The PV19 were facing 10 years in prison for illegal voting charges, and as well as an additional 10 years for aggravated perjury, for a potential maximum of 20 years total.

This article highlights the dangers Black people face voting in the post-segregation south. Instead of laws on the books to explicitly prevent Black people from voting, unequal enforcement of laws will be used instead to limit the power of the Black vote.
