Grovey v Townsend Court Case – March 11th, 1935

R.R Grovey, an African American man, attempted to vote in the Democratic Primary and was denied a ballot on account of race. Grovey sued, stating that his 14th and 15th Amendment rights had been violated. The Texas Justice Court ruled that Grovey’s rights hadn’t been violated because the Democratic Party was a private political organization, so the 14th and 15th amendment didn’t apply.
