Protest at the Waller County Courthouse – April 2, 1992
On April 2, 1992, Prairie View A&M University students gathered outside the Waller County Courthouse in Hempstead to protest the criminalization of their votes. The demonstration coincided with a press conference organized by students and their attorney, Gene L. Locke, just hours before several students were called to appear before a grand jury. Many had voted by affidavit after not receiving registration cards, a legal method now under scrutiny. Protesters carried signs and marched to defend what they saw as a fundamental right under attack. The protest made visible a larger struggle: whether Black student voters would be recognized as legitimate participants in Waller County’s political system.
