Students Celebrate Mandela’s Freedom – March 2, 1990
On March 2, 1990, PVAMU students gathered in solidarity with the global anti-apartheid movement, celebrating the release of Nelson Mandela while affirming a broader struggle for Black freedom. This moment reflects how PVAMU students understood their activism as part of an international fight against racial injustice. That same political consciousness would soon shape the PV 19 protests, as students turned from global solidarity to local action, challenging voter suppression in Waller County. By linking apartheid abroad to disenfranchisement at home, these students asserted that the struggle for democracy was both global and deeply local.
