This Sunday carried an especially meaningful moment for our family.

The worship program listed the Prelude/Bringing of the Light with two young acolytes: Albert Garfield and Noah Moore.

Seeing Noah’s name printed there stopped me for a moment.

He is learning to serve as an acolyte, participating in one of the rituals that helps open worship and symbolize the presence of Christ within the sanctuary. For a nine-year-old boy, it may seem like a relatively simple responsibility. As his father—and as a historian—I see something more.

I see a child learning that he has a place in a community.

I see him being entrusted with responsibility.

I see people teaching him traditions that existed long before he arrived and, in doing so, inviting him to help carry those traditions forward.

There is something profoundly moving about watching your child become part of the life of a congregation that your family joined only recently.
